Diesel Featonby – School Based Apprentice of the Year 2026

Congratulations to Diesel Featonby – School‑Based Apprentice of the Year

We are proud to congratulate Diesel Featonby, who has been named School Based Apprentice of the Year at the 2026 Bendigo Kangan TAFE Awards.

Diesel began his journey with the Australian Industry Group Apprentice & Trainee Centre and our host company Tylden Equipment Sales in Kyneton in 2024 as a school‑based apprentice in welding and Fabrication. While continuing his studies at Kyneton High School, he worked part‑time in the workplace, steadily building confidence, technical skill, and a genuine enthusiasm for the trade.

Diesel’s welding journey actually began long before he started with us. After being given his Dad’s 20–30‑year‑old stick welder in 2022, he spent countless hours practising at home — challenging himself with difficult angles, experimenting with different techniques, and teaching himself problem‑solving skills that now serve him well in the industry. Over time he became proficient in Stick, MIG, TIG, and Flux‑core welding, producing gates, stools, tables, trailer repairs, and even creative art pieces.

His eagerness to learn, strong work ethic, and ability to think through design challenges have made him a standout apprentice from day one. Diesel arrives motivated, ready to work, and always keen to pick up tips from experienced tradespeople around him.

Diesel has now progressed into a full‑time Fabrication apprenticeship with Australian Industry Group ATC and Tylden Equipment Sales — a fantastic achievement that highlights just how powerful a school‑based apprenticeship can be. His story shows that young people can enter a trade with confidence, knowing what the work is really like and having already built practical skills and workplace experience.

This award is a testament not only to Diesel’s talent and determination but also to the strong partnership between Australian Industry Group ATC, Tylden Equipment Sales, and Bendigo Kangan TAFE. Together, we are helping young people in regional Victoria take meaningful first steps into rewarding trade careers.

Congratulations, Diesel, on this well‑deserved recognition. We’re excited to see where your full‑time apprenticeship takes you next.
