From Weipa to Melbourne: Broadening Horizons Through Apprenticeships

Two of our school-based apprentices from Weipa in far north Queensland have recently travelled to Melbourne for a highly unique development opportunity with our host company Aggreko, gaining valuable exposure to the wider industry while continuing their apprenticeship journey.

Xander and Billy, both Indigenous apprentices, are undertaking school-based apprenticeships supported by Aggreko, balancing school commitments with practical workplace experience at the company’s Weipa operations. Their commitment to learning is particularly impressive, with a typical workday involving a 45-minute bus trip, a 45-minute ferry journey to the island mine site, and a further 20-minute drive before they even arrive at work. Despite spending close to three hours travelling each day they attend work, both apprentices have embraced the opportunity with great enthusiasm.

As part of Aggreko’s commitment to their development, the pair recently visited the company’s Melbourne workshop, where they were welcomed by the local team and introduced to a different side of the business. The visit was designed to broaden their understanding of the scale and diversity of work undertaken by Aggreko and help them appreciate the career opportunities available should they choose to transition into full-time apprenticeships after finishing school in 2026.

During discussions with them at a morning tea held by Aggreko in Melbourne, both spoke enthusiastically about their apprenticeship experience and the opportunities they have been offered so far. While Melbourne’s winter temperatures were proving a significant adjustment from the tropical climate of Weipa, they were eager to make the most of every experience.

“One of the most rewarding parts of the visit was watching Matt Smith, one of our fourth-stage diesel mechanic apprentices, sharing his knowledge with Xander and Billy as he walked them through an engine overhaul. It perfectly demonstrated the apprenticeship journey in action, with one apprentice helping inspire and guide others who are just beginning their careers. We’re incredibly grateful to Aggreko for creating these opportunities and investing so heavily in the development of these young people

The Australian Industry Group ATC has proudly supported Xander and Billy throughout their apprenticeship journey to date, including several visits to the Weipa site as part of our ongoing field support. Our team was also pleased to reconnect with the apprentices in Melbourne and continue supporting their development.

The experience extends beyond the workplace. During their stay, Xander and Billy will also attend an AFL match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, an opportunity neither could quite believe they had been offered. The excitement and appreciation shown by both apprentices highlighted just how significant this experience has been.

We are incredibly grateful to the team at Aggreko for their dedication to supporting apprentices and creating meaningful opportunities for young people. Their commitment to apprenticeship development was recognised in 2025 when Aggreko and the Ai Group Apprentice and Trainee Centre were named finalists in the AEN Awards for our collaborative apprenticeship program Aggreko and ATC recognised as Finalists at AEN Victorian Awards .

Supported by their families, their community in Weipa, Aggreko and the Australian Industry Group ATC, Xander and Billy are gaining experiences that will help shape their future careers. Their journey is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when employers invest in young talent and go above and beyond to create opportunities that inspire the next generation.
